
Lab Diamonds Explained: The Modern, Ethical Choice
Lab-grown diamonds are now the natural starting point for most diamond purchases — not the alternative, the default. The technology has caught up with traditional mining to the point where the stones are genuinely indistinguishable from the ones pulled out of the earth, with a price and traceability profile that simply works better. This guide is about what lab-grown diamonds actually are, why we use them in our diamond ranges, and what to know before you buy one.
The basics: what a lab-grown diamond is
A lab-grown diamond is a real diamond. Not a substitute, not a simulant, not a piece of glass with a coating. The crystal structure is the same as a mined diamond — pure carbon atoms arranged in a cubic lattice. The chemical composition is identical. The optical and physical properties are identical. Hardness, refractive index, brilliance, durability, fire — all the same.
The difference is where the stone was formed. Mined diamonds were created over a billion or so years under heat and pressure deep in the earth, then extracted by mining. Lab-grown diamonds are created in controlled environments in weeks or months using one of two processes: HPHT (high pressure, high temperature, which mimics the natural conditions) or CVD (chemical vapour deposition, which builds the diamond layer by layer from a carbon-rich gas).
Both processes produce a stone that is chemically and physically identical to a mined diamond. The only meaningful difference is provenance — and the difference that provenance makes to environmental impact, traceability and price.
How they're graded
Lab-grown diamonds use the same grading system as mined diamonds — the standard four Cs: cut, colour, clarity and carat. They're graded by the same gemological laboratories and use the same scales. A G-colour, VS1-clarity, ideal-cut lab diamond is exactly that: G colour, VS1 clarity, ideal cut. The certificate that comes with a lab-grown diamond looks essentially identical to the certificate that comes with a mined one, with one extra line noting the laboratory origin.
That standardised grading is part of why lab-grown diamonds have become a serious choice. You're not buying into a different system — you're buying a diamond that's graded against the same benchmarks as every other diamond.

What lab-grown isn't
A few common confusions worth clearing up.
Lab-grown diamonds are not the same as moissanite, cubic zirconia, or other diamond simulants. Those are different materials that look diamond-like to the naked eye but have different chemical compositions, different hardness, and different optical properties. Under a jeweller's loupe, a trained eye can tell. A lab-grown diamond is a diamond.
Lab-grown diamonds are not ‘fake'. The word gets used loosely on the internet, but it's incorrect — the stones are chemically and physically real diamonds.
Lab-grown diamonds don't ‘cloud over' or ‘fade'. They're as durable as mined diamonds — rated 10 on the Mohs hardness scale, the same as any other diamond — which means they don't scratch, dull or lose their sparkle with wear.

Caring for a lab-grown diamond
Lab-grown diamonds are as hard as mined diamonds, but the setting (9K gold or any other precious metal) is softer and more fragile. So the care advice is the same as for any fine diamond jewellery:
Take pieces off before contact sports, gym sessions, or anything involving impact. The stone will be fine; the setting can bend or loosen.
Clean with warm water and a drop of mild dish soap, then a soft toothbrush around the stone. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners at home — they can loosen pavé or smaller side stones over time. Bring the piece in periodically for professional cleaning.
Store fine jewellery individually in soft pouches to avoid scratching the gold settings (the diamond won't scratch, but the setting can).
